SPOTLIGHT ON SLIMLINE 1U
The SlimLine 1U (SL1) has an extremely low profile, occupying only one vertical rack unit (1U = 1.75"). Constructed from a combination of aluminum and steel to provide a rugged, cost-effective and flexible design platform, this formidable monitor/keyboard is intended for use in industrial and military applications. It achieves this ultra-low profile by hinging an LCD from behind the keyboard, such that the display lies flat (facing upward) and behind the keyboard when stowed in the rack.
A spring coil latch and machined handle firmly secure the display in its stowed position. The LCD hinges upward on continuous friction hinges such that it can be positioned at virtually any angle that the operator desires, from 0 to 90+ degrees.
Interface connectors for video, keyboard, pointing device and power are located on the rear of the enclosure, facing inward, to reduce the overall depth. By default, the monitor is configured to operate from +12 VDC or +24 VDC. Optionally, an integrated AC switching power supply is available.
A pair of solid-bearing chassis slides (20", 22" or 24" long) facilitates the mounting of the SlimLine 1U into a rack chassis.
The SlimLine 1U can be configured with a variety of LCD display sizes and resolutions, with options available for high brightness, sunlight readability and NVIS compliance. A variety of display overlays and surface treatments (e.g., antireflective, antiglare) are available to protect the LCD or to add other functionality and performance.
A vast assortment of commercial-, industrial-1 and military-2grade keyboards are available for integration, with or without integrated pointing devices. Multiple keyboard protocols are supported including PC (USB, PS/2, AT, XT) and SUN® (Type 5 [8-pin Mini-DIN], Type 6 [USB]), as well as custom or proprietary interfaces.
Similarly, a wide selection of video controllers are available to complete your configuration, allowing you to fine tune the display features and support to your specific video requirements.

SPOTLIGHT ON SLIMLINE LITE II
The low profile SlimLine Lite II (SL2) is the premiere, fully-integrated LCD monitor/keyboard/pointing device for 19" rack chassis applications. Although it integrates many of the same components as a laptop (i.e., LCD, keyboard, pointing device) and physically resembles one as well, its 2U high (3.50") enclosure has been designed specifically to endure the harsh environments of industrial, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), and military applications. The flip-up display head folds over the keyboard and pivots up using torque-adjustable friction hinges, allowing operators to optimize the viewing angle. Our design technique also ensures the smallest enclosure footprint (height and depth) in the industry.
The SlimLine Lite II’s narrow depth allows it to occupy minimal space in front of the rack during operation. For example, an SL2-19W will extend less in front of the rack (18" total) than a comparably configured SL1-19W (25" total). Similarly, an SL2-15X will extend 5" less than its SlimLine 1U counterpart. This trait makes it very desirable for deployment in narrow spaces, such as aboard a ground vehicle or naval vessel.
Locking style connectors for all interfaces are located at the back of the case to facilitate cable management schemes. Use of Ny-lock hardware and isolation dampening materials further improve the durability under shock and vibration conditions.
A Rack Adaptor facilitates installation of the SlimLine Lite II into a 19" RETMA rack, functioning as both a drawer and a protective case. The SlimLine mounts to the Rack Adaptor via a pair of integrated, ball bearing slides that permit the monitor/keyboard to be slid in and out of the rack, and lock into place. A hinged bezel on the Rack Adaptor latches to the unit to prevent it from moving either horizontally or vertically when subjected to vibration while in the stowed position.
Other accessories may be added to the Rack Adaptor Kit such as an integrated power supply, cable management guides, KVM switches and display retention bracket.
The SlimLine Lite II's compact design (and industrial durability), combined with General Digital’s legendary configuration control and long product life cycles, makes it the ideal display solution for network administration, telecommunications, mobile (transit case), tactical in-vehicle applications and more.
The SlimLine Lite II can be configured with a variety of LCD display sizes and resolutions, with options available for high brightness, sunlight readability and NVIS compliance. A variety of display overlays and surface treatments (e.g., antireflective, antiglare) are available to protect the LCD or to add other functionality and performance.
A vast assortment of commercial-, industrial-1 or military-2grade keyboards are available for integration with, or without, integrated pointing devices. Multiple keyboard protocols are supported including PC (USB, PS/2, AT, XT) and Sun® (Type 5 (8-pin mini-DIN), Type 6 [USB]), as well as custom or proprietary interfaces.
Similarly, a wide selection of video controllers are available to complete your configuration, allowing you to fine tune the display features and support to your specific video requirements.

RUGGED ENCLOSURES: STANDARD VS CUSTOM
General Digital has created dozens of “standard” enclosures that serve as baseline designs for our customers. Inherently, these designs possess configuration flexibility allowing customers to choose the standard electronics (e.g., display, video controller, keyboard and trackball, power supply), as well as the optional electromechanical options such as display overlays (e.g., touch screens, vandal shields, heaters, EMI filters), I/O connections (e.g., video, touch, power) and other engineering services (e.g., optical bonding, film laminations).
Often, our customers require some tailoring of the enclosure designs to meet their specific requirements. The requests vary widely from military requirements for environment, shock/vibration, and/or emissions, to unique mounting requirements, specialty cooling or custom colors, to name just a few.
General Digital’s team of experienced Design Engineers will either modify existing enclosure designs or custom design a new enclosure (and associated electronics) to meet our customer’s specific commercial, industrial or military program needs. Although custom engineering is often synonymous with expensive, modifications to our existing designs are often very cost effective since most of the electronic subassemblies have already been modeled in our Pro-Engineer CAD system, and our modular enclosure designs are usually scalable. Typically, we have found that 70-85% of a custom design can be satisfied with previous engineering efforts that have already been completed, thereby significantly minimizing the redesign cost to our customers.
RUGGED ENCLOSURES: CONSTRUCTION/ADVANTAGE
General Digital’s rugged enclosures are designed for durability, safety, design flexibility and long product life cycle. Our enclosures are constructed from heavy-duty aluminum and intended to survive in harsh environments such as factory floors, food processing, medical and military (MIL-STD-810F/MIL-STD-901D) applications.
The material being flat stock allows us to make modifications without requiring costly secondary processes. In addition, the corners are formed by an extensive process of bending, welding and grinding. In a drop test, we have found that our corners outperform those found on deep-drawn or molded enclosures. Overall, this assembly technique yields a high performance, moderate cost, flexible design.
Our enclosures are completely irridited to provide protection from corrosion and improve shielding properties where parts make contact with one another. All external surfaces are finished with a durable black powder coat paint, although custom colors are available upon request. Enclosure edges are rounded for safety.
Unlike plastic enclosures (commodity products), whose mold is usually designed for one specific display and set of control electronics, our modular and “customizable” enclosures offer superior configuration flexibility. Our modular and flexible designs permit us to readily introduce contemporary display technologies and optional electronics (e.g., heaters, touch screens, EMI filters, Smart Card [CAC] readers) with minimal modifications to our existing designs, if any.
Our products are intentionally designed to support multiple LCD display models (and other control electronics) from a variety of OEM manufacturers (e.g., Sharp, NEC, Samsung, LG, AU Optronics, etc.). This capability enables us to minimize the impact of a single suppliers’ decision to obsolete, allocate or redesign their display/electronics, upon our ability to maintain configuration control or extend the manufacture life of our products. It also allows us to provide our customers wih the best electronics to suit their application requirements.
RUGGED ENCLOSURES: FRICTION HINGES
The SlimLine 1U features continuous friction hinges that pivot the display head 90 degrees. The number of hinges and their torque setting has been carefully selected by our design team. The torque is factory set and not user adjustable.
The SlimLine Lite II display head is mounted to the main enclosure via a pair of custom friction hinges that enable the display to pivot over 90 degrees. The rugged hinges are constructed from lightweight aluminum and are user adjustable, providing torque settings up to 80 in·lbs. A tubular shaft at the center of the hinge allows for cable routing, thereby improving cable shielding and minimizing cable chaffing. The design of the hinges prevents backlash or free play, reduces spring-back and produces a constant torque for over 25,000 cycles (typical).
RUGGED ENCLOSURES: CONNECTOR PANELS
All of the standard interfaces (video source, keyboard, pointing device and power) utilize a locking style connector (where applicable).
Interface connectors on the SlimLine 1U are located on a pair of connector panels located at the rear of the main enclosure, on either side of the display head assembly. The number and size of the connectors is limited by two factors—the amount of surface area available on the connector panel, and the amount of interface cables that can be routed along either side of the display head assembly to reach the connector panel. Connections are provided for the keyboard, pointing device, power and at least one video input source. If desired, additional connectors can be added by increasing the overall depth and/or the depth of the connector panel.
Interface connectors on the SlimLine Lite II are located on the rear of the main enclosure. Typically, connections are provided for the keyboard, pointing device and power, as well as any connections provided on the edge card of the integrated video controller. The video controller is internally mounted at the rear of the enclosure with its edge card directly exposed to the operator to eliminate the need for expensive and space consuming interface cables. For this reason, it is very important for customers to select the proper video controller with all of the required interfaces located on the edge card. In some cases, additional interface support can be supplied, provided adequate surface area is available on the connector panel.
RUGGED ENCLOSURES: ON-SCREEN DISPLAY (OSD) CONTROLS
The SlimLine 1U and SlimLine Lite II can be configured with a variety of standard or custom user controls, including membrane or silicone keypads, both with or without LED backlighting. Some models can be configured to provide NVIS compatibility or configured with electronics that allow backlight dimming.
RUGGED ENCLOSURES: GASKETS
General Digital offers a variety of standard and custom gaskets to augment the performance of the SlimLine Series of monitors including:
- Watertight gaskets (e.g., closed cell, neoprene, rubber, single-sided adhesive, double-sided adhesive, O-ring). These gaskets may be provided between the LCD (or overlay) and the front bezel to prevent liquids from entering the enclosure through the display opening.
- Dust gaskets (e.g., open cell gaskets) are often supplied for monitors that do not require a liquid-tight seal between the display and/or overlay and the bezel, or for systems that use a touch technology (e.g., SAW) that are only compatible with certain gasket types.
- EMI/RFI gaskets to reduce radiated and conducted emissions of the monitor.
- Dessicating gaskets that can be used to prevent moisture/condensation from forming between the LCD and the overlay when exposed to high humidity.
RUGGED ENCLOSURES: POWER
The low profile enclosure is typically available with a separate (external) power supply, which connects to a DC input connector on the SlimLine 1U. Some enclosures will also support integration of an internal power supply. For applications requiring a shallower enclosure or a unique power source, we optionally offer a DC input and/or DC-DC converters with a wider input power range and reverse polarity.
DISPLAYS AND BACKLIGHTS
General Digital can integrate virtually any LCD display size/resolution, from almost any panel manufacturer (OEM), into our SlimLine enclosures. To assist in selecting the right panel for your application requirements, we have provided a list of commonly used or recommended panels for standard/low luminance, high brightness, sunlight readable and NVIS-compatible needs. New display models are constantly being introduced to the market by the LCD manufacturers, making it extremely difficult for us to maintain a comprehensive list. For this reason, we encourage you to speak with a Sales Engineer to share your price and performance objectives, so we can assist you in making the best display selection.
STANDARD DISPLAYS (SLIMLINE)
General Digital has provided a sample listing of some common transmissive displays that are not sunlight readable. Typically, these displays are suitable for applications that are not going to require specialty functionality, such as sunlight readability or NVIS compatibility, and for customers with cost-sensitive budgets.
LCD backlight produces sufficient luminance for use in office, shaded and low ambient/darkness light levels. However, luminance is insufficient to overcome reflected light for use in direct sunlight.
TRANSMISSIVE-ENHANCED VIEW DISPLAYS (SLIMLINE SOLAR)
This type of technology boosts the efficiency of the backlight’s light utilization and minimizes surface reflection of ambient light. It is a transmissive LCD module that produces high contrast images, even in bright outdoor light and direct sunlight. These displays feature a wider color reproduction range than reflective LCDs. Featuring an LED backlight, these displays consume very little power and produce very little heat, making them ideal for integration into fully sealed enclosures, which are devoid of ventilation holes and cooling fans to dissipate heat. They also provide the additional benefit of a wide operating/storage temperature (as great as -30°–85° C), so that they can endure exposure to greater internal ambient temperatures. As a design note, we have found that these panels work best when coupled with an overlay that has an antireflective (AR) coating. Overlays that inhibit transmissivity (e.g., resistive touch screen) or have antiglare (AG) coatings will significantly reduce the panel’s performance in high ambient lighting conditions. Since transmissive displays produce greater brightness from their LED backlights than traditional transflective displays, they are regarded as a better outdoor solution, as they can generate high contrast in total darkness, in direct sunlight or on a cloudy/hazy afternoon.
T-EVT technology uses the high brightness/efficiency LED backlight as a light source while minimizing the surface reflection of ambient light. The result is an LCD that produces high contrast images even in bright outdoor light or direct sunlight.
GENFLECTIVE™/TRANSFLECTIVE DISPLAYS (SLIMLINE SOLAR)
This type of panel incorporates a highly reflective backlight that reflects the ambient lighting back out of the display to enhance its native brightness produced by its active backlight. Like the Transmissive-Enhanced View Displays, these panels work best when coupled with an AR-coated overlay. They are least effective with overlays that retard the light transmission (e.g., resistive touch sensors) or have a matte finish.
T-EVT technology uses the high brightness/efficiency LED backlight as a light source while minimizing the surface reflection of ambient light. The result is an LCD that produces high contrast images even in bright outdoor light or direct sunlight.
SUNLIGHT READABLE (SLIMLINE SOLAR)/NVIS COMPATIBLE (SLIMLINE SOLAR NVIS) DISPLAYS
These displays feature a value-add backlight, typically made from high efficiency LEDs. These displays produce significant active luminance. Often, the peak luminance is limited by internal ambient temperature constraints or must be connected to an intelligent backlight controller and thermal sensor that will automatically reduce brightness/power to avoid over-temperature conditions or thermal shutdown. The high luminance output makes them ideal for use with a wide variety of overlays such as touch sensors, EMI filters, heaters, etc.
Sunlight readable displays use a General Digital-enhanced, highly efficient, super bright/sunlight readable LED backlight to provide maximum functional brightness. The addition of surface treatments such as antireflective coatings and optical bonding reduce surface reflections and increase contrast so displays can be used in direct sunlight.
If our stock offering does not suit your needs in terms of size, fit or function, please contact a Sales Engineer and we will work with you to configure a system to your specifications. Customers can also request that we integrate one of our many LED-based sunlight readable, NVIS or sunlight readable/NVIS enhanced displays into their SlimLine product. These solutions provide many advantages, such as increased longevity, improved durability, higher brightness, lower power consumption, and/or NVIS compatibility.
VIDEO CONTROLLERS
Internal to every LCD monitor is a video controller. The purpose of the video controller is to accept industry-standard analog and/or digital video inputs and convert those signals into a format that is required to drive the LCD display. User controls are provided that allow the user to calibrate and adjust various attributes of the video signal to optimize its presentation on the LCD.
General Digital offers a wide range of video controllers for customers to choose from to meet their varied requirements. Determining factors for the selection of a video controller may include the physical size of the controller, types of video support required, special features (e.g., rotate or invert video, Picture-in-Picture) and/or cost. Both SLimLine models can accommodate virtually any of our supported controllers, or even a third-party controller supplied by the customer.
After selecting a video controller, customers must inform General Digital’s Sales Engineers which of the video inputs supported on the video controller they require, as well as specify what type of connector they need. Please note that connector space may be limited by the size of the display and its associated enclosure/connector panel.
General Digital can reprogram the video controller firmware/BIOS to support a variety of video timings and specialty needs, such as STANAG 3350 A, B and C, RS-343 and RS-170. Most of our video controllers can also support interlaced and non-interlaced analog video (separate, composite and Sync-on-Green) as well as live video such as NTSC, PAL or SECAM. Some controllers will also support HD-SDI or SD-SDI as a standard or optional feature.
Please speak with a Sales Engineer to optimize your video controller selection.

2U BRIDGE/POWER SUPPLY/KVM SWITCH (OPTION) ASSEMBLY
The Power Supply/KVM Assembly consisting of a 2U high mounting bridge and an enclosed/ventilated power supply allows the cable management guide to operate freely beneath it. The mounting bridge attaches directly to the Cable Management Extension Bracket, thereby maintaining a fixed distance (see drawings) behind the SlimLine Lite II (when it is stowed). General Digital can install a variety of power supplies and output connectors upon customer request.
When the 19" Rack Adaptor Kit is configured with the Power Supply Assembly and Cable Management Guide Kit, it will occupy a minimum of 24" of rack depth.
Mounting holes on the mounting bridge are provided to attach an optional 4-port KVM Switch (20-232).

OPTICAL BONDING
The optical and mechanical performance of General Digital’s LCD monitors can be augmented with our optical bonding services, provided by our Optical Bonding Laboratories (OBL) business unit.
Optical bonding is a process in which OBL adheres an overlay (e.g., touch screen, vandal shield, EMI filter, heater) over the surface of an LCD display using an index (of reflection) matched, optically clear adhesive. By using an adhesive that is index matched to the LCD and the overlay, OBL can reduce the amount of internal reflections within the Optical Stackup [display plus overlay(s)], thereby increasing the contrast of the display passively (without requiring additional power or energy). Adding an antireflective coating to the viewing surface of the overlay further improves contrast by reducing the surface reflections. The combined reduction of reflected light allows more of the LCD’s backlight brightness to reach the user’s eye without being “washed out.” Optical bonding is especially useful for applications that will be used in high ambient lighting or direct sunlight.
Optical bonding is also used to create vandal shields or to strengthen the protection in front of the LCD. Optical bonding can also be used to eliminate air gaps between the LCD and an overlay to prevent the buildup of moisture and/or condensation when exposed to high humidity.
General Digital Optical Bonding Laboratories has mastered a variety of techniques, using a variety of bonding materials, so that we can offer solutions that meet your budgetary and/or technical requirements, whether your application is commercial, industrial, marine or military in nature. For additional information, please speak with a Sales Engineer.

CONFIGURATION CONTROL AND PRODUCT LONGEVITY
We at General Digital are completely responsible for the design and manufacturing of our products, allowing us to maintain nearly total control of their future. Our experience supporting Department of Defense programs has taught us the value of designing products with foresight so that they can be manufactured, serviced and upgraded for many years. Though the market introduces new innovations and product upgrades at an alarming rate, our product management team knows the importance of proactive customer notification and can offer product adaptation with similar or equivalent performance before designs become obsolete, thereby extending the product life cycle.
PRIVATE LABELING
General Digital encourages relationships with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and other organizations, and is willing to maintain your company identity (private label) on our products. Please speak with a Sales Engineer for additional information.
General Digital designs and manufactures scores of standard and custom monitor configurations each year, making the creation of informational and technical documentation for each configuration impractical. We’ve found that by efficiently combining data into a select few documents, we answer most questions that customers typically ask. We strive to keep our documentation as current as possible, given the rapidly changing nature of the industry, which is why we recommend checking back periodically for updates.
