ADAPTABLE DESIGN SERVES INDUSTRY, MILITARY, VARs AND OEMs
The universal acceptance of LCD technology in the commercial, industrial and military sectors has revolutionized display applications. However, consumer-grade and commercial solutions often lack the performance that many of these applications require, i.e., operation in harsh and demanding environments. In particular, their plastic enclosures afford little design flexibility or ruggedization.
Furthermore, most LCD monitor manufacturers do not typically offer support beyond 24 months. General Digital created its own rack mount flip-up LCD monitors in response to the need for adaptable and durable displays built for long-term use. Perfectly suited to industrial and military environs are the rack-mounted Rack Mount Hinge™ with a deep drawer, the dual display TwoView Micro™ and the shallow drawer SlimLine Micro flip-up LCD monitor.
All SlimLine Micro models satisfy the needs of System Integrators/VARs and OEMs/End Users with elegant simplicity, modular adaptability and cost sensitivity. Additionally, they are designed to operate from a single +12V regulated source that can be supplied by the customer, or may be purchased directly from General Digital.
Optimized for its ultra-low profile (1.75" high), the SlimLine Micro is designed to save valuable space and expense by providing a reliable and user-friendly operator interface. The SlimLine Micro’s compact design (the smallest dimensionally in our product line) and industrial durability, combined with General Digital’s legendary configuration control and long product life cycles, make it the ideal display solution for network administration, telecommunications, mobile (transit case), tactical in-vehicle applications and more.
AMTFT LCD SCREENS
As advances in LCD technology continue to emerge, General Digital integrates these advances into virtually any size display you require. Our stock offering sizes range from 15.0" to 19.0" (diagonal viewing area); however, we are able to accommodate many screen sizes beyond this range. All of our active matrix TFT LCD panels offer up to 16.7 million colors, wide viewing angles and fast response times (which is ideal for high definition live video). In order to ensure product availability and long life, we scrupulously qualify multiple sources of supply. HIGH PERFORMANCE LCD CONTROLLER
Internal to our SlimLine Micro flat panel monitor is a state-of-the-art LCD controller that converts analog video signals into the proper digital signals required to drive the display. It is this LCD controller that enables the flat screen display to function as a direct replacement for the traditional CRT. The controller provides intuitive operation of its controls and calibration through the use of a (typically) front-mounted membrane keypad and a series of on-screen menus.
All SlimLine Micro models support the following display image controls: auto and manual setup, brightness, contrast, horizontal position, vertical position, tuning, size, individual RGB adjust, image expansion on/off, system information, run-time counter and signal level. Advanced features are supported on a selective basis, including image rotate and invert, audio controls, advanced scaling, gamma, color temperature and color gain.
All standard SlimLine Micro units support interlaced and non-interlaced analog video (separate, composite, Sync-on-Green). Support for STANAG 3350 A, B and C analog SoG video is also included as a standard feature. To accommodate the latest video standards, the SlimLine Micro can be factory-configured (optionally) to support analog, digital, integrated video (DVI-A, DVI-D, DVI-I); high definition multimedia interface video (HDMI); and high definition and standard serial digital interface video (HD-SDI, SD-SDI); fiber optic video signal extension via fiber optic to DVI conversion.
LIVE VIDEO SUPPORT
The SlimLine Micro can be optionally configured to support NTSC, PAL, RS-170 and SECAM video in composite video or S-video format. Also supported are high definition multimedia interface video (HDMI), and high definition and standard serial digital interface video (HD-SDI, SD-SDI). The fast response times of our active matrix TFTs make them ideal platforms for live video input.
HIGH BRIGHTNESS DISPLAYS FOR IMPROVED OUTDOOR VIEWABILITY
Today, LCD panels typically produce a maximum brightness (white light) of 200–350 nits, which is insufficient luminance (brightness) in environments where they are exposed to high ambient lighting or direct sunlight—without requiring “value-added” improvements. General Digital has found that a luminance of greater than 100 fL (343 nits) is required for daylight applications, and a luminance of greater than 200 fL (686 nits) is required for sunlight readable applications. It should be noted that the contrast ratio of the panel and the reflectance (surface and specular) of the viewing surface also play significant roles in determining a display’s luminance requirement in high ambient lighting conditions. General Digital possesses the capability of augmenting the luminosity of most LCD panels by implementing one or more of the following product improvements:
- Replace standard backlight and inverter with “high brightness” backlight and inverter
- Add and/or replace LCD optical films
- Add contrast enhancement filters to surface of LCD display
- Optically bond contrast filters to LCD display to improve optical path and reduce surface and/or specular reflectance
Although General Digital has introduced our value-added “high brightness” capability to a number of our standard products, we have elected to integrate this capability primarily on a “semi-custom” basis. This decision is largely influenced by the impracticality of supporting all of the permutations of standard product that we now offer. We have found that a “tailored” solution of our standard product, rather than “off-the-shelf,” will best meet customer needs. And, in fact, many of our standard models are designed to accommodate sunlight and daylight readability. In some cases, General Digital will require a minimum purchase quantity or a small, non-recurring engineering charge to implement a “high brightness” upgrade. General Digital’s rugged aluminum enclosures are designed to withstand the rigors of commercial, industrial and military environments alike. Our enclosures are completely irridited (conductive anodized); this provides protection from corrosion and improves shielding properties where metal parts make contact with one another. All external surfaces are finished with a durable black powder coat. Plastic enclosures (found on commodity products) are usually designed for a specific display and control electronics, whereas our modular enclosures offer superior configuration flexibility. This modular and flexible design eliminates extensive redesign while still permitting us to incorporate contemporary technological advances. We intentionally design products that support LCD displays (and other electronics) from numerous manufacturers. This capability enables us to minimize the impact of a single supplier's decision to allocate, redesign, or render obsolete their display; this gives us the ability to maintain configuration control and extend the manufacturing life of our products, as well as keep costs down for the end user.
ULTRA LOW PROFILE ENCLOSURE
The 1U high (1.75") rack mount enclosure of the SlimLine Micro is constructed from a combination of steel and aluminum, providing a cost-effective, lightweight housing that can be used in most commercial and industrial applications. Additionally, the SlimLine Micro can be mounted to a ceiling or wall. Use of continuous-friction hinges permit the display to be user adjusted over a usable range of greater than 90°. A spring coil latch is used to secure the display while it is stowed. A pair of 20" or 24" long chassis slides facilitate rack mounting and ease of operation. Interface connectors for input power, and optional keyboard/pointing device are located on the rear of the device, and face inward to keep the overall depth of the system at 20"/24" (depending on display size).
The SlimLine Micro’s enclosure is designed with both durability and safety in mind. Constructed from heavy duty aluminum, our enclosure is built to survive demanding environments such as factory floor, food processing, medical and military (MIL-STD-901D, MIL-STD-810F) applications. The enclosure is manufactured using flat stock—this enables General Digital to make modifications without requiring costly secondary processes, dies and molds. In addition, the corners are formed by an extensive process of bending, welding and grinding. Though other means of manufacture exist, in independently-conducted drop tests, our corners outperform those found on deep-drawn or molded enclosures. Overall, this assembly technique permits General Digital to offer a high performance product, at a moderate cost, with flexible design options.
PROTECTIVE GLASS/OVERLAY AND SEALED GASKET
General Digital protects your display against direct contact with foreign objects by overlaying the liquid crystal display with a pane of one (or more) of the following options: optical-grade antiglare-etched, or antireflective-coated glass; chemically-strengthened and tempered glass; laminated glass vandal shield; polycarbonate or acrylic plastic protective overlay; touch screen; optical bonding; optically clear EMI/RFI ITO-coated glass shield. To provide even greater protection, a sealed gasket is installed between the display and bezel, as well as the bezel and protective overlay, to guard the monitor’s electronics from dust, liquids (e.g., spilled drink) and other debris.
The slim enclosure is typically available with an integrated (or externally attached) power supply. For applications requiring a thinner enclosure or a unique power source, we optionally offer a separate external supply.
All of the interfaces (video, serial, power, etc.) utilize shielded locking connectors that are (typically) located on the rear of the enclosure.

General Digital gladly offers its engineering services to customers who require special customization of our LCD monitors and our complete product line, which meets their commercial, industrial, military or unique application requirements.
