5.0" Sunlight Readable, LED Backlit, Display Head Assembly with Intelligent Controller
Part Number 90-4050-001
General Digital has developed a highly integrated and intelligent display head assembly for deployment in an airborne / cockpit application. In order to fit the 5" active matrix LCD display into a 4 x 5 ATI enclosure, the LCD had to be laser cut in one corner. To make the LCD sunlight readable, we manufactured our own low power, direct-lit, LED backlight, which efficiently provides high brightness without creating or dissipating undesired heat. An NVIS compatible version of the backlight is also available as an option. A microprocessor-based controller automatically adjusts the backlight brightness based on ambient light and temperature conditions reported from integrated sensors. The controller also controls an optical heater which is integrated to extend the LCD’s cold temperature operating range down to -40° C. The heater is optically bonded to the LCD to nearly eliminate any internal reflections produced by exposure to direct sunlight, thereby enhancing the LCD’s contrast in high ambient light environments.
