Optical Bonding

Optical bonding–affixing two optical elements to one another using a liquid adhesive–improves a display’s optical performance, and its resistance to shock, vibration and moisture. For over a decade, Optical Bonding Laboratories has expertly bonded thousands of displays. Now, we’re ready to take on your project.

Brightness/Contrast Enhancements

As more and more displays find their way into outdoor and other high ambient lighting environments, their brightness output must be at a level most off-the-shelf displays can’t achieve. Optical Bonding Laboratories offers several effective solutions.

NVIS Compatibility

Night vision goggle-compatibility (NVIS) for use in military ship and shore radar surveillance. General Digital has many years of experience providing monitors with NVIS technology to the defense industry.

Touch Screens

Touch screens offer ease of use, speed, accuracy, and negate the need to become proficient with a handheld device. General Digital offers the option of equipping your LCD monitor with a variety of touch technologies.

  • Industries Served By Display Enhancements

    Automotive

High brightness and contrast and easy readability in a bright car interior or bright sunlit conditions will be required. Color will be demanded to provide additional performance to the user and highlight critical information. Displays in this category will be extremely price sensitive and competitive.

    • Global Positioning System (GPS) Receivers
    • Navigation Systems
    • Mobile Entertainment Displays
    Avionics

Stringent operating conditions in commercial aircraft have always taxed the ingenuity of display designers. The limited space associated with aircraft as well as concern over weight, power and voltage requirements in conjunction with high ambient lighting conditions creates a challenging environment which is ideal for antireflective flat panel displays. Because GPS systems are used in the cockpit, they require rugged displays that conform to tight space constraints, high brightness and contrast, a wide viewing angle and the ability to be readable in full sunlight.

In-flight entertainment display requirements are subject to varying ambient light conditions and require good viewing angles and readability in direct sunlight.

    • Cockpit Applications
    • Air Traffic Control Towers
    • In-flight Entertainment Displays
    • Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
    Commercial

Most human-machine interface systems like ATM machines and Kiosks require touch screens, which can hinder the brightness of a display up to 30%. In addition, these displays need to be able to withstand harsh environments and be readable in direct sunlight.

    • ATM Machines
    Digital Signage

“Eye catching” is the key word for the digital signage business. Displays used for this application are subject to varying ambient light conditions and require good viewing angles and readability in direct sunlight.

    • Mobile Billboards
    • Advertising Displays
    Industrial

Displays in industrial control environments are used in both fixed and mobile applications, and include freight docks, inventory control systems, manufacturing work stations and forklifts. These displays are used by factory workers, field service technicians and offshore oil drillers in a wide range of industries.

Displays used in industrial applications need to be rugged and able to withstand wide environmental conditions. They must be readable in various ambient light conditions and have high contrast and protection from physical damage and chemicals.

    • Process Control Equipment
    • Test Equipment
    • Factory Floor Applications
    In-Vehicle

High brightness and contrast and easy readability are imperative for bright sunlight conditions for applications for police, fire, and ambulance vehicles and navigation systems. This market requires a display with high brightness and contrast and readability across a wide range of ambient lighting conditions, including direct sunlight. This enables police and firefighters to quickly see and interpret information on the display from virtually anywhere inside the vechicle.

    • Emergency Vehicles
    • Navigation Systems
    Long Haul Trucks

Long-haul trucking is a very challenging operating environment for electronics, and the display system is the highest profile portion of the system. This market requires a display with high brightness and contrast and readability across a wide range of ambient light conditions—including direct sunlight—to enable drivers to quickly see and interpret information on the display from virtually anywhere inside the cab. In this application, additional requirements are reliability, long operating life, wide temperature tolerances, good viewing angles, and the ruggedness to survive the shock and vibration typical of the punishing trucking environment.

    • Driver Message Centers
    • Route Management Systems and Diagnostics
    Marine

Multitasking is the buzzword for the new models of marine electronics for pleasure boats, fishing craft and yachts. Manufacturers are coming out with “combo” models that perform the duties of two or three standalone units. The primary functions being combined are: GPS, chartplotting and depthfinder functions.

Displays that are used in boats require superior weather and water resistance (ruggedization), small size and the ability to be viewable in sunlit conditions.

    Medical

Emergency Medical Service personnel must have constant access to life-saving equipment during emergency resuscitation and other similar situations outside of the hospital. Operating under rigorous conditions, this equipment must offer unparalled contrast, high brightness, wide viewing angles, sunlight readability, ruggedness, portability and low power requirements. Patient monitors have a strict requirement of being able to deliver accurate, detailed information to the medical staff, enabling timely and accurate diagnoses. In addition, patient monitoring equipment requires crisp, clear, high resolution images, fast response times, high brightness, full color, reliability and wide viewing angles. Medical imaging displays today require very high resolution, easy viewing in dim light or a dark room, fast response and sustained performance at extreme viewing angles. Grayscale is frequently used in diagnostic applications and there is resistance to the use of color in those systems which reproduce X-ray photos.

    Military

Stringent operating conditions for military applications have always taxed the ingenuity of display designers. Limited space, concern over weight, operating temperature, shock and vibration, power and voltage requirements in conjunction with high ambient lighting conditions creates a challenging environment which is ideal for high-bright, ruggedized displays.

    Mobile Applications

Wider viewing angle, increased brightness and contrast, and color domain can be achieved under direct sunlight. Applications like PDA’s, cell phones, laptops, and handheld game systems can all be improved to meet these requirements.

    • PDAs
    • Cell Phones
    • Laptop and Notebook Computers
    • Handheld Game Consoles
    • In-Vehicle Entertainment Displays
    Off-Highway Transport

Off-highway, heavy equipment monitoring systems allow customization for a wide variety of tasks including vehicle performance measurement, driver productivity monitoring and preventive maintenance. The monitoring systems enable the most efficient use of equipment, personnel and production schedules by providing immediate access to vital information for both the driver and the manager. The growing off-highway environment demands displays that will perform in harsh environments typical of such applications where bright ambient light, space-saving mechanical constraints and wide temperature range requirements are common. These displays must be readable even in direct sunlight conditions.
