6 October 2005 General Digital™ Corporation Again Named One of Connecticut’s Fastest Growing Technology Companies in Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50 Program. Attributes Focus on Further Development of Leading Edge LCD Enhancement and Ruggedization Technology to its 44% Revenue Growth General Digital’s CEO Bryan Gudrian credits the company’s 44% revenue growth to more focused and persistent efforts in further development of superior LCD technology. Throughout the organization—including sales and marketing, various engineering departments, manufacturing, quality control and support services—everyone worked diligently to improve an already advanced technological product offering. He commented that “better infrastructure and focusing on our technological strengths are the two most significant reasons we have realized our growth.” General Digital’s increase in revenues of 44% from 2000 to 2004 resulted in a ranking of 38 in the Technology Fast 50 for Connecticut. The average increase in revenues among companies who made the Technology Fast 50 for this region was 36% percent.
To qualify for the Connecticut Technology Fast 50, companies must have had operating revenues of at least $50,000 in 2000 and $1,000,000 in 2004, be headquartered in Connecticut, and be a “technology company,” defined as a company that owns proprietary technology that contributes to a significant portion of the company’s operating revenues; or devotes a significant proportion of revenues to the research and development of technology. Using other companies’ technology in a unique way does not qualify. Winners of the 15 regional Technology Fast 50 programs in the United States and Canada are automatically entered in Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500 program, which ranks North America’s top 500 fastest growing technology companies. General Digital™ was founded in 1973 in East Hartford by two University Professors who shared a vision of a company that would take on technological challenges that remained unsolved by other industry specialists. In addition to its flat panel LCD business, the company provides software testing services for companies requiring RTCA-DO-178B certification of their code. Additionally, the company has served as principal designer and manufacturer for many brand name companies who utilize outsource partners for their end products. General Digital remains privately held. The company’s web site can be found at www.GeneralDigital.com. Sales ended at $10.7 million—which proved to be its second highest total in company history for the 32-year-old South Windsor, CT company. Additionally, there are several lesser known records that General Digital™ achieved: Their Software Quality Services business unit set a new all-time high sales record, which exceeded its previous record set in 1998. Among many challenging programs tested during the year, they successfully tackled TRENT 900, which was of the highest profile for their customer, Hamilton Sundstrand and end customer, Rolls-Royce. General Digital’s™ newest business unit, Optical Bonding Laboratories (OBL), set a new shipping record of nearly 1,000 optically bonded or laminated LCDs. Though the sales figure is not a record, the volume of LCDs is certainly something to be celebrated. With orders from the U.S. Marine Corps, Datalux, Pixelink and Astronautics, to name a few, 2004 kept the OBL team quite busy. All this in only their third year providing optical enhancement services. Their LCD monitor business unit capitalized on stock builds of popular standard products and landing several high volume customers. Among them are the U.S. Marine Corps, ARINC, WR Systems, SPAWAR Systems Center, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Raytheon. Company executives fully expect 2005 to result in more growth for General Digital™ and all previous sales records to be broken. General Digital™ will see many orders from the same customers and programs, but there will be many more orders of varying quantities and product/service varieties. They have successfully negotiated another three-year blanket purchase order with Hamilton Sundstrand for its software testing services. They are pursuing reestablishment of its testing services with Pratt & Whitney. There are several significant LCD and optical bonding orders being pursued, some of which are pending with the U.S. government, leading government contractors, as well as commercial and industrial manufacturers. General Digital™ is increasing and focusing its marketing efforts on the primary methods customers use to find them: the Internet and word of mouth. In addition, they have renewed their contract for a billboard in the Charleston, SC area, targeting SPAWAR Systems Center Charleston. They are already seeing positive effects from all marketing efforts, with many new customers being referred to them from former and current customers, and other new customers finding them on the Internet and calling after seeing the billboard. “Indeed, 2005 will be another year to count our blessings and one for the record books,” stated Vice President Tenell Rhodes. General Digital™ was founded in 1973 in East Hartford by two University Professors who shared a vision of a company that would take on technological challenges that remained unsolved by other industry specialists. In addition to its flat panel business, the company provides software testing services for companies requiring RTCA-DO-178B certification of their code. Additionally, the company has served as principal designer and manufacturer for many brand name companies who utilize outsource partners for their end products. General Digital remains privately held. purpose flat panel monitors and provider of software quality services,
announced that it has developed a new
optical technology, GenFlective,
which can be integrated into most of its standard product offerings or
sold as a standalone product. A GenFlective™-enhanced LCD is a display that General Digital™ has altered, using passive enhancements, to improve the brightness (transmissive and/or reflective) and/or the contrast of the display. Although each display has its own personality, due to differences in design, manufacturing techniques and in the stock film stack, General Digital™ can typically enhance the performance of an OEM panel utilizing Optical Management Films, Polarizers and Diffusers, and a multitude of films and coatings (Contrast Enhancement, Index Matched, Antireflective, etc.). In contrast to value-add backlights, LCDs enhanced with GenFlective™ technology do not require any additional power since General Digital™ has not modified the OEM bulbs or backlights. In addition to reduced power consumption, this benefits the end user with cooler running units, which in turn negates the need for bulky, complex and/or expensive cooling systems (fans, heat exchangers, heat pipes, etc.) that traditional value-add backlights typically require. Another benefit resulting from these factors is improved reliability (reduced piece count). Since the LCD’s lamps are not being overdriven, the GenFlective™ enhancements do not adversely affect the brightness half-life of the bulbs. A direct correlation exists between the brightness half-life of the bulbs and the suitability and cost of ownership of the integrated solution. For example, most bulbs are rated for 50,000 hours when operated at their intended drive current. As a rule of thumb, the bulbs will lose 10% of their initial brightness during their first 500-2,000 hours and 1-5% for every 1,000 hours of use thereafter. Longer brightness half-life also reduces the cost of ownership by reducing the frequency in which the backlights must be replaced. In theory, candidate displays for GenFlective™ enhancement can be of any size, resolution or manufacturing origin. The success of the candidate display is most influenced by the display’s aperture, transmissivity and the “personality” (OEM film recipe). To further enhance LCD performance and improve its ruggedness, GenFlective™ technology can be combined with optical bonding, provided by General Digital’s™ Optical Bonding Laboratories™. Sales ended at $8.6 million with $14.1 million in new orders resulting in a record for both bookings and billings for the 29-year-old South Windsor, CT company. Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Thomas Burke, said, “Sales into the government sector remained strong throughout 2001 while sales in the industrial sector showed disappointing growth. Fortunately, our strategy has been to serve both industrial and government customers. We determined years ago that these two market segments tend to be counter-reciprocal with respect to business peeks and valleys. This foresight has allowed us to remain largely unaffected during the recent economic turmoil in the U.S. market.” Among some of its successes during 2001, General Digital was named sole supplier for sunlight readable air traffic control tower monitors for the FAA’s Standard Terminals Automation Replacement System (STARS) program. Raytheon, the prime contractor for the STARS program, was awarded the contract to modernize 175 air traffic control towers operated by the FAA and DOD. General Digital was just one of numerous competitors vying for the business. “Many of these were billion-dollar multinational corporations,” added Mr. Burke. General Digital has also applied for several patents on its unique sunlight readable LCD panel designs. President Bryan Gudrian noted, “We feel that the move to our new expanded facility in South Windsor, combined with establishing a state of the art optical bonding lab, places us in an enviable position to take on more technical challenges that were simply not possible a year ago. Our new capabilities and our experienced Engineering staff positions us for major growth in the coming years.” The company was founded in 1973 in East Hartford by two University Professors who shared a vision of a company that would take on technological challenges that remained unsolved by other industry specialists. In addition to its flat panel business, the company provides software testing services for companies requiring RTCA-DO-178B certification of their code. Additionally, the company has served as principal designer and manufacturer for many brand name companies who utilize outsource partners for their end products. General Digital remains privately held. The company’s web site can be found at www.GeneralDigital.com. 11 January 2002 General Digital Completes Relocation to South Windsor, CT General Digital Corporation, a maker of industrial and special purpose flat panel monitors, announced today that it has successfully completed the relocation of its corporate headquarters and primary manufacturing facility to South Windsor, Connecticut. The move to the old Dynamics Control building at Nutmeg Road South provided the rapidly growing company with over 25,000 square feet of electronic-grade manufacturing space. The building had been left vacant since 1996 when Hamilton-Sunstrand (then Hamilton-Standard) acquired Dynamic Controls from the founder, Tom Farkas, but declined to acquire the building. ![]() General Digital President, Bryan Gudrian, commented, “The previous use of the building as an electronics manufacturing facility, as well as its location near major highways, made the building an ideal candidate for our fast growing high-tech company.” Gudrian, a graduate of UCONN’s Electrical Engineering program as well as an alumnus of South Windsor High School, added, “I have been a lifelong resident of South Windsor and it feels good to be able to bring quality jobs and career opportunities back home. We’re excited to be a growing company and look forward to continued prosperity here in South Windsor.” Privately held and founded in 1973 in East Hartford, CT, and operating from Manchester, CT for the past five years, General Digital has seen explosive growth in recent years. Currently, the company employs over 50 people at its new facility. The worldwide acceptance of flat panel technology and the company’s early roots in that field have allowed it to earn a reputation of being the innovators of flat panel technology. The company considers the industrial OEM, Air Traffic Control, military and other government sectors as its primary customers. General Digital is currently the solely qualified FAA source for sunlight readable LCD monitors for Air Traffic Control Tower use. |
