The need for capable computing extends beyond a ruggedized flat panel LCD monitor. Customers often require specific options or accessories included in the design for space constraints or to ensure a fuller computing experience. It’s not enough to provide ruggedized, specialized, and customized displays; many depend on General Digital to provide innovative solutions. In this post, we highlight some of our most popular peripherals.
KVM SWITCHES
A KVM switch is a hardware device that enables a user to control multiple computers through a single keyboard, video monitor, and mouse; thus providing a more versatile workstation. KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) switches are often used by organizations to save money and space when one user needs access to more than one computer. They are also frequently found in server farms where only periodic access to each separate server in the farm is necessary.
Data centers are another place that utilize KVM switches, where multiple servers are installed in a single rack and operate with a single keyboard, monitor and mouse. The KVM switch provides data center personnel access to any server in the rack. Positioned discreetly in the rear of many of our rack mount display products, the KVM switch is out of sight but not out of mind. More integrated versions are in the works with our own spin on the controls and user interface.
SMART CARD READERS
Also known as CAC (Common Access Card), a “smart” card is about the size of a credit card and is the standard form of identification for active duty uniformed service personnel, Selected Reserve, DoD (Department of Defense) civilian employees, and eligible contractor personnel. It is also the principle card used to enable physical access to buildings and controlled spaces. Additionally, access to DoD computer networks and systems is increasingly provided through the use of smart cards in the CAC program.
Many security-sensitive applications need smart card readers for access control and authentication. Employee ID badges, citizen ID documents, electronic passports, driver’s licenses, and on-line authentication devices are often made from smart cards because they provide greater security than magnetic stripe cards or other methods of identification. Smart cards can be used for identification, authentication, data storage and application processing. The benefits of smart cards are directly related to the vast amount of information and applications that can be programmed for use on a card.
Improved security, better data, and reduced processing costs through the use of smart cards can lower costs for governments and regional authorities. Such savings help reduce public budgets or enhance public services. With the vast majority of our business comprising military and government, the request for smart card readers as a peripheral is not at all surprising.
COMPACT FLASH CARD READERS
Beyond Smart Card readers, there is the need for CompactFlash (CF) card readers, as well. 
CompactFlash cards, a mass storage device format used to download or transfer digital files, are small, lightweight, and portable. Their primary use is in high-end digital SLR cameras (DSLRs) with interchangeable lenses.
USB PORTS
USB ports and multi-port hubs have also been integrated into our LCD monitor designs. With a single USB port capable of connecting up to 127 peripheral devices, such as mice, flash drives, and keyboards (to name a few), it’s no wonder that customers would demand them.
CD/DVD/BLU-RAY DRIVES
Integrated CD, DVD, and Blu-ray drives for greater multimedia capabilities are desirable options. Also, booting up with a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray disc is convenient to users, which eases the necessity of a computer to provide a less secure hard drive, not to mention the burden of finding space for it within the confines of an equipment rack.
SPEAKERS
We’ve found that more programs require audio capabilities for a variety of reasons. General Digital can incorporate small speakers into many of our monitors. Characteristics such as sound specifications or differences in wattage are all taken into consideration when incorporating speakers into the design. Our superior approach to implementation helps to keep the grand goal in perspective: more resources in less space.
THAT’S JUST THE BEGINNING…
The above options and accessories are but a small fraction of the peripherals offered by General Digital. Many components can be seamlessly integrated into the design of our products for the operator’s ease of use, be they common or specialized.
