Sealed Protection from the Elements

General Digital adds an extra level of protection to its rugged LCD monitor line in the form of the Barracuda Series. Sealed to IP67 and NEMA 4/6 standards, the Barracuda marine display offers protection against contamination from blowing dust, falling dirt or debris, rain, sleet, snow, splashing fluids, hose-directed liquids, external formation of ice on the enclosure and submersion in water (up to 1 meter depth) for up to 30 minutes.

The Barracuda is ideally suited for dusty or wet conditions typically found in industrial, military or marine environments, such as food handling, outdoor kiosks, ships, docks or anywhere a monitor is exposed to changing weather conditions.

Rugged Enclosures: Standard vs Custom

General Digital has created dozens of “standard” enclosures that serve as baseline designs for our customers. Inherently, these designs possess configuration flexibility allowing customers to choose the standard electronics (e.g., display, video controller, power supply), as well as the optional electromechanical options such as display overlays (e.g., touch screens, vandal shields, heaters, EMI filters), I/O connections (e.g., video, touch, power) and other engineering services (e.g., optical bonding, film laminations).

Often, our customers require some tailoring of the enclosure designs to meet their specific requirements. The requests vary widely from military requirements for environment, shock/vibration and/or emissions, to unique mounting requirements, specialty cooling or custom colors, to name just a few.

General Digital’s team of experienced Design Engineers will either modify existing enclosure designs or custom design a new enclosure (and associated electronics) to meet our customer’s specific commercial, industrial or military program needs. Although custom engineering is often synonymous with expensive, modifications to our existing designs is often very cost effective since most of the electronic subassemblies have already been modeled in our Pro-Engineer CAD system, and our modular enclosure designs are usually scalable. Typically, we have found that 70-85% of a custom design can be satisfied with previous engineering efforts that have already been completed, thereby significantly minimizing the redesign cost to our customers.

Rugged Enclosures: Construction/Advantage

The Barracuda's rugged waterproof, dustproof aluminum enclosures are designed to withstand the rigors of industrial, military, marine and outdoor environments alike. They are also engineered to provide durability, safety, configuration flexibility and long product life cycle.

The flat stock aluminum used allows us to make modifications without requiring costly secondary processes. In addition, the corners are formed by an extensive process of bending, welding and grinding. In a drop test, we have found that our corners outperform those found on deep-drawn or molded enclosures. Overall, this assembly technique yields a high performance, moderate cost and flexible design.

Our enclosures are completely irridited to provide protection from corrosion and improve shielding properties where parts make contact with one another. All external surfaces are finished with a durable black powder coat paint, although custom colors are available upon request. Unlike plastic enclosures (commodity products), whose mold is usually designed for one specific display and set of control electronics, our modular and “customizable” enclosures offer superior configuration flexibility. Our modular and flexible designs permit us to readily introduce contemporary display technologies and optional electronics (e.g., heaters, touch screens, EMI filters) with minimal modifications to our existing designs, if any.

Our products are intentionally designed to support multiple LCD display models (and other control electronics) from a variety of OEM manufacturers. This capability enables us to minimize the impact of a single suppliers’ decision to obsolete, allocate or redesign their display/electronics, upon our ability to maintain configuration control or extend the manufacture life of our products. It also allows us to provide our customers wih the best electronics to suit their application requirements.

Rugged Enclosures: Styles

To meet our customer's technical and budgetary requirements, the Barracuda enclosure is offered in two models, referred to as Generation 1 (enclosure model #15) and Generation 2 (enclosure model #31).

Generation 1 Enclosure (Model #ff = 15)
Barracuda PanelMount Waterproof LCD Monitor Generation 1 EnclosureThe Generation 1 enclosure represents General Digital’s original sealed enclosure design. This version is consistent with our heritage as a custom engineering company offering virtually unlimited configuration options.

The Generation 1 enclosure is a bottom-up design that is designed to fit around the specific electronics selected by the customer. As such, customers are essentially allowed to select any of our video controllers, a display of their choice and a plethora of optional electronics. As a result of supporting the Generation design, we have introduced a multitude of configurations that now serve as standard products.

 

 

 

Generation 2 Enclosure (Model #ff = 31)
Barracuda PanelMount Waterproof LCD Monitor Generation 2 EnclosureIn 2012, General Digital engineers redesigned the Barracuda and introduced the Generation 2 configuration. The second generation of the Barracuda has been redesigned specifically to reduce cost, minimize size, increase reliability and simplify assembly.

Unlike the first generation Barracuda, which allowed integration of virtually any of our video controllers, the second generation enclosure supports only two controllers. These controllers have been chosen for their compact size and absence of edge card connectors that, if present, would increase the footprint when interconnect cables were connected. We also took the redesign opportunity to change the manner in which the enclosure sealed in order to improve reliability and assembly while further reducing cost.

The final major change was to the enclosure aesthetics. The new design facilitated a more pleasing exterior, regardless of its mounting configuration: standalone/mountable, panel mount or rack mount.

Rugged Enclosures: Mechanical Configurations & Mounting Options

The Barracuda Series of LCD monitors is available in three mounting configurations: standalone, panel mount and rack mount. Each of these mounting configurations can be further configured with displays that offer varied brightness/performance such as standard brightness, high brightness, sunlight readable and NVIS-compatible. A summary of the mounting configurations and display options is provided in the paragraphs below.

PANEL MOUNT
The Barracuda PanelMount enclosure includes a front bezel that facilitates the mounting of the barracuda monitor into a console. The intent is for the main enclosure to pass through a cutout in the customer’s target console and mount to said console using the oversized flange on the panel mount bezel. Customers can select one of our existing bezel designs, or request one that meets their specific requirements.

General Digital also offers a variety of liquid-tight gaskets to seal the bezel to the host console. Download our detail drawing for customer-supplied information required for a custom panel mount bezel and an explanation of the terminology.

At a minimum, customers must specify the following:

  • Distance the oversized flange must extend from the Barracuda’s main housing on all four sides (top, bottom, left, right)
  • Method of mounting (pressed-in threaded studs or external mounting hardware)
  • Size of studs or diameter of mounting holes (countersunk holes are the default)
  • Number of threaded studs or mounting holes required on each edge of the oversized flange

STANDALONE
The Barracuda Standalone enclosure is designed to be used either as a portable monitor that can be carried from one location to another, or mounted to a pedestal, yoke, bracket or articulating arm using the VESA mounting holes on the rear of the enclosure. Depending upon the size of display selected, and its corresponding enclosure, General Digital will provide mounting holes that comply with VESA’s standard for 75mm, 100mm or 100mm x 200mm patterns.

RACK MOUNT
Although General Digital can readily supply a fully sealed IP67- and NEMA 4-/NEMA 6-compliant enclosure with a sealed rack mount bezel, our experience has made it clear that most rack applications require only a sealed bezel—in extreme cases, a sealed bezel and a drip-proof main enclosure.

The laws of physics dictate that a ventilated enclosure will experience a much lower internal ambient temperature increase than a sealed enclosure, since it is able to more freely exchange its internal air with its external surroundings. As a result, our monitors that are housed in fully sealed enclosures (Barracuda Series) will typically have a lower maximum operating temperature than similarly configured Saber monitors housed in a ventilated enclosure, or those that include forced air cooling (e.g., cooling fans).

To prevent the monitor's electronics from over-heating, General Digital may have to limit the brightness of our high brightness displays to reduce power/heat dissipation and minimize the potential of incurring an over-temperature condition that might damage the LCD. Alternatively, General Digital can install an intelligent LED Backlight Controller and thermal sensors that will automatically reduce brightness/power, when necessary, to avoid an over-temperature condition. 

General Digital encourages our customers to review their system requirements, speak with a Sales Engineer and consider using a Saber RackMount monitor with a NEMA 4/NEMA 6 rack bezel, rather than a Barracuda RackMount, to optimize the performance parameters of their selected monitor configuration whenever possible.

Rugged Enclosures: Connector Panels

Every monitor is equipped with weatherproof connectors that are sealed, regardless of the type of connection. Sealed connections are provided for video inputs, power, touch screen (USB or serial) and programming ports as well as customer-specified interfaces. A variety of industry standard D-sub or military circular connectors are available for integration.

Rugged Enclosures: On-Screen Display (OSD) Controls

The Barracuda enclosure can be configured with a variety of standard or custom user controls, including membrane or silicone keypads, both with or without LED backlighting. Some models can be configured to provide NVIS compatibility or configured with electronics that allow backlight dimming.

Rugged Enclosures: Gaskets

The LCD Overlay is sealed to the front bezel of the enclosure to prevent liquids from entering through the display cutout. In addition, gaskets/seals are provided between the two halves of the enclosure.

Optionally, General Digital offers a variety of gaskets to augment the performance of the Barracuda Series of monitors including:

  • Liquid/watertight gaskets (e.g., closed cell, neoprene, rubber) with various mounting options (single-sided adhesive, double-sided adhesive, O-ring). These gaskets may be provided with a panel mount or rack mount bezel to provide a NEMA 4/6 seal between the bezel and the host console or rack.
  • Dust gaskets (e.g., open cell gaskets) which are often supplied for monitors that do not require a liquid-tight seal between the display and/or overlay and the bezel, or for systems that use a touch technology (e.g., SAW) that are only compatible with certain gasket types.
  • EMI gaskets to reduce radiated and conducted emissions of the monitor.
  • Dessicating gaskets that can be used to prevent moisture/condensation from forming between the LCD and the overlay. These are especially useful for displays that are exposed to high humidity environments such as those found in marine/maritime applications. Alternatively, the display and overlay can be optically bonded to remove the air gap between the two surfaces altogether.

Power

By default, the Barracuda is configured to operate from +12V DC for low power (e.g., standard luminance) configurations, and +24V DC for high power (e.g., sunlight readable) configurations. In these cases a variety of external desktop power supply options can be purchased from General Digital (or supplied by customer). Optionally, General Digital can integrate a DC-DC converter which will allow the monitor to operate from a wider range of DC input, such as from a vehicle battery or other power source. Typically, it is impractical to integrate an AC/DC power supply inside of the Barracuda since it is difficult to dissipate heat out of the enclosure.

Displays and Backlights


Display and backlight types
General Digital can integrate virtually any LCD display size/resolution, from almost any panel manufacturer (OEM), into our Barracuda enclosures. To assist in selecting the right panel for your application requirements, we have provided a list of commonly used or recommended panels for standard/low luminance, high brightness, sunlight readable and NVIS-compatible needs. New display models are constantly being introduced to the market by the LCD manufacturers, making it extremely difficult for us to maintain a comprehensive list. For this reason, we encourage you to speak with a Sales Engineer to share your price and performance objectives, so we can assist you in making the best display selection.


STANDARD DISPLAYS (BARRACUDA)
General Digital has provided a sample listing of some common transmissive displays that are not sunlight readable. Typically, these displays are suitable for applications that are not going to require specialty functionality, such as sunlight readability or NVIS compatibility, and for customers with cost-sensitive budgets.

Standard brightness display types
LCD backlight produces sufficient luminance for use in office, shaded and low ambient/darkness light levels. However, luminance is insufficient to overcome reflected light for use in direct sunlight.


TRANSMISSIVE-ENHANCED VIEW DISPLAYS (BARRACUDA SOLAR)
This type of technology boosts the efficiency of the backlight’s light utilization and minimizes surface reflection of ambient light. It is a transmissive LCD module that produces high contrast images, even in bright outdoor light and direct sunlight. These displays feature a wider color reproduction range than reflective LCDs. Featuring an LED backlight, these displays consume very little power and produce very little heat, making them ideal for integration into fully sealed enclosures, which are devoid of ventilation holes and cooling fans to dissipate heat. They also provide the additional benefit of a wide operating/storage temperature (as great as -30°–85° C), so that they can endure exposure to greater internal ambient temperatures. As a design note, we have found that these panels work best when coupled with an overlay that has an antiglare (AR) coating. Overlays that inhibit transmissivity (e.g., resistive touch screen) or have antiglare (AG) coatings will significantly reduce the panel’s performance in high ambient lighting conditions. Since transmissive displays produce greater brightness from their LED backlights than traditional transflective displays, they are regarded as a better outdoor solution, as they can generate high contrast in total darkness, in direct sunlight or on a cloudy/hazy afternoon.

Transmissive-EVT High Brightness Display Types
T-EVT technology uses the high brightness/efficiency LED backlight as a light source while minimizing the surface reflection of ambient light. The result is an LCD that produces high contrast images even in bright outdoor light or direct sunlight.


GENFLECTIVE™/TRANSFLECTIVE DISPLAYS (SABER SOLAR)
This type of panel incorporates a highly reflective backlight that reflects the ambient lighting back out of the display to enhance its native brightness produced by its active backlight. Like the Transmissive-Enhanced View Displays, these panels work best when coupled with an AR-coated overlay. They are least effective with overlays that retard the light transmission (e.g., resistive touch sensors) or have a matte finish.

GenFlective/Transflective High Brightness Display Types
T-EVT technology uses the high brightness/efficiency LED backlight as a light source while minimizing the surface reflection of ambient light. The result is an LCD that produces high contrast images even in bright outdoor light or direct sunlight.


SUNLIGHT READABLE (BARRACUDA SOLAR)/NVIS COMPATIBLE (BARRACUDA SOLAR NVIS) DISPLAYS
These displays feature a value-add backlight, typically made from high efficiency LEDs. These displays produce significant active luminance. Often, the peak luminance is limited by internal ambient temperature constraints or must be connected to an intelligent backlight controller and thermal sensor that will automatically reduce brightness/power to avoid over-temperature conditions or thermal shutdown. The high luminance output makes them ideal for use with a wide variety of overlays such as touch sensors, EMI filters, heaters, etc.

Sunlight Readable/NVIS-Compatible Display Types
Sunlight readable displays use a General Digital-enhanced, highly efficient, super bright/sunlight readable LED backlight to provide maximum functional brightness. The addition of surface treatments such as antireflective coatings and optical bonding reduce surface reflections and increase contrast so displays can be used in direct sunlight.

These solutions provide many advantages, such as increased longevity, improved durability, higher brightness, lower power consumption and/or NVIS compatibility.

Video Controllers

High performance video controllerInternal to every LCD monitor is a video controller.The purpose of the video controller is to accept industry-standard analog and/or digital video inputs and convert those signals into a format that is required to drive the LCD display. User controls are provided that allow the user to calibrate and adjust various attributes of the video signal to optimize its presentation on the LCD.

General Digital offers a wide range of video controllers for customers to choose from to meet their varied requirements. Determining factors for the selection of a video controller may include the physical size of the controller, types of video support required, special features (e.g., rotate or invert video, Picture-in-Picture) and/or cost. The Barracuda can accommodate virtually any of our supported controllers, or even a third-party controller supplied by the customer.

After selecting a video controller, customers must inform General Digital’s Sales Engineers which of the video inputs supported on the video controller they require, as well as specify what type of connector they need. Please note that connector space may be limited by the size of the display and its associated enclosure/connector panel.

General Digital can reprogram the video controller firmware/BIOS to support a variety of video timings and specialty needs, such as STANAG 3350 A, B and C, RS-343 and RS-170. Most of our video controllers can also support interlaced and non-interlaced analog video (separate, composite and Sync-on-Green) as well as live video such as NTSC, PAL or SECAM. Some controllers will also support HD-SDI or SD-SDI as a standard or optional feature.

Options and Accessories

A myriad of display enhancements and services are available such as: Sunlight Readable and/or NVIS LED backlights, optically bonded overlays, vandal shields, touch screens (various technologies), EMI/RFI filters, antireflective coatings/antiglare etching, heaters and optical bonding.

Optical Bonding

Optical bonding improves display performance by reducing reflectionsThe optical and mechanical performance of General Digital’s LCD monitors can be augmented with our optical bonding services, provided by our Optical Bonding Laboratories (OBL) business unit.

Optical bonding is a process in which OBL adheres an overlay (e.g., touch screen, vandal shield, EMI filter, heater) over the surface of an LCD display using an index (of reflection) matched, optically clear adhesive. By using an adhesive that is index matched to the LCD and the overlay, OBL can reduce the amount of internal reflections within the Optical Stackup [display plus overlay(s)], thereby increasing the contrast of the display passively (without requiring additional power or energy). Adding an antireflective coating to the viewing surface of the overlay further improves contrast by reducing the surface reflections. The combined reduction of reflected light allows more of the LCD’s backlight brightness to reach the user’s eye without being “washed out.” Optical bonding is especially useful for applications that will be used in high ambient lighting or direct sunlight.

Optical bonding is also used to create vandal shields or to strengthen the protection in front of the LCD. Optical bonding can also be used to eliminate air gaps between the LCD and an overlay to prevent the buildup of moisture and/or condensation when exposed to high humidity.

Display

The Barracuda enclosure has been carefully designed to allow our design engineers to modify/customize the existing designs to accommodate a limitless variety of display size/resolution combinations. Customers greatly benefit since they can request virtually any OEM LCD of their choice (CCFL or LED Backlit) for integration, or select from a growing list of value-added Genflective, Sunlight/High Brightness or NVIS-Compatible enhanced LCDs.

In the tables below is a sampling of display panels in which we have integrated into monitors, or verified compatibility. New display models are constantly being introduced to the market by the LCD manufacturers, making it extremely difficult for us to maintain a comprehensive list.

    Barracuda NEMA Sealed Waterproof LCD Monitor

    The Barracuda by General Digital is designed to be Real World Rugged. Sealed against liquid immersion (watertight), dust and other contaminants to NEMA 4/6 and IP67 specifications, the Barracuda not only stands up to a good splash, it can also take the plunge. This video shows the Barracuda fully submerged in a fish tank, much as it appears at trade shows at which General Digital exhibits. Not only is the monitor completely sealed, but the connectors are as well. This means that whether the connectors are populated or not, even fully submerged, they are impermeable to the elements. Available in sizes ranging from 6.4" to 24" (and even larger), the Barracuda's versatility makes it a necessity for displaying information in nearly any harsh environment.
